From the 18th-23rd of November 2019, the CO Awareness week will be the first CO industry collaborative awareness week of its type.
The Silent Killer
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that can kill you quickly. It is called the “silent killer” because it is colourless, odourless, tasteless and non- irritating. If the early signs of CO poisoning are ignored, a person may lose consciousness and be unable to escape the danger. More people die from carbon monoxide exposure than any other kind of poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week
The Carbon Monoxide Awareness week will run from the 18th till the 23rd of November, the campaign aims to reduce incidents, fatalities and ill health due to carbon monoxide poisoning by raising awareness amongst consumers.
What the law requires
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 place duties on gas consumers, engineers, suppliers and landlords. Ventilation and flues are covered by The Building Regulations. By law, anyone carrying out work on gas appliances or fittings as part of their business must be competent and a Gas Safe registered engineer.
How to prevent CO Poisoning
CAVIUS strongly recommends the use of audible CO alarms as a useful back-up precaution, but they must not be regarded as a substitute for proper installation and maintenance of gas appliances by a Gas Safe registered engineer. CO alarms should comply with European standard EN 50291 and should be installed, checked and serviced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
CAVIUS would like to encourage all their followers to share their social media campaign across the social channels and inform their family and friends of the dangers of CO poisoning. We will be sharing daily posts highlighting symptoms, precautions and what to do in order to keep safe.
